Job Summary

The Fleet Mechanic / Inmate Supervisor is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the Sheriff's Office fleet, including patrol vehicles, administrative vehicles, and other department-owned equipment. This position requires the ability to supervise and oversee inmate workers who assist in basic maintenance and other assigned tasks. The role also requires the individual to obtain and maintain a Corrections License as regulated by the Texas Administrative Code 217.
Principle Duties

• Diagnose, maintain, and repair fleet vehicles and equipment, including brakes, engines, electrical systems, and transmissions.

• Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance to ensure optimal performance.

• Maintain service records, repair logs, and parts inventory for all fleet vehicles.

• Coordinate with vendors for parts, supplies, and specialized repairs beyond in-house capabilities.

• Use diagnostic tools and software to identify vehicle issues.

• Adhere to workplace safety standards and state/local regulations.

• Assist with emergency response support as required by the Sheriff's Office.

• Supervise inmate workers in fleet maintenance tasks, ensuring safety and security.

• Oversee daily inmate activities, ensuring custody, control, and supervision.

• Monitor contraband, unusual behavior, and escape attempts.

• Supervise the feeding of inmates and inmate worker assignments.

• Ensure adherence to all security protocols and procedures.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical, drug test, and physical readiness test.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive background check, including fingerprinting, and a search of local, state, and national records.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or naturalized citizen for TCOLE certification.
  • Never been convicted, plead guilty (nolo contendere), nor have been on court-ordered community service/probation, or deferred adjudication for a Class A misdemeanor or a felony.
  • Within the past ten (10) years, has not been convicted of, pleaded guilty (nolo contendere) to, been placed on community service/probation, or received deferred adjudication for a Class B misdemeanor in this state, any other state, or while serving in the military.
  • Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from a military court-martial.
  • Two (2) years or more of experience as an automotive, diesel, or fleet mechanic.
  • Knowledge of automotive systems, diagnostic procedures, and repair techniques.

Special Requirements

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a corrections, detention, or law enforcement environment.
  • Experience supervising inmate workers or individuals in a correctional setting.
  • Welding, fabrication, and technical repair skills.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain fleet-related certifications (ASE preferred).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of automotive mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair fleet vehicles effectively.
  • Proficiency with modern automotive repair tools and diagnostic technology.
  • Ability to supervise inmate workers while maintaining safety and security.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, or move objects up to 75 pounds.
  • Exposure to weather conditions and varied work environments (indoor/outdoor).
  • Ability to operate tools, equipment, and machinery related to fleet maintenance.
Work Environment
  • Primarily works in a garage, maintenance shop, or outdoor environment.
  • Works near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes, chemicals, and airborne particles.
  • Must maintain safety protocols while working around inmates and mechanical equipment.
Special Requirements
  • Must complete and maintain required training as specified by the Sheriff's Office and the Texas Administrative Code.
