Job Summary:

The Director of Academic Advising and Retention has responsibilities that include, but are not limited to, improving the quality of academic advising and student retention by providing information, advice, and assistance to students. This is an exempt position that reports to LSCPA's Student Services Department.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in education, guidance counseling, student development, or related discipline
  • Three to five years of experience providing effective academic advising to students in higher education

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Provide an advising program that is efficient and effective.
  2. Interpret institutional, general education, and major requirements, policies, and procedures.
  3. Provide academic advising of technical and academic students on the selection of appropriate courses and other educational experiences.
  4. Texas Success Initiative Assessment compliance duties; Evaluate advising staff to assure accurate advising, registration, and TSIA compliance for students.
  5. Provide information for Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, IPEDS report, and other agencies.
  6. Collaborate with colleagues and departments across the campus and community to promote student learning, growth, development, persistence, and success.
  7. Supervise Academic Advisor, Scholarship Coordinator, and Disability Services Coordinator positions.
  8. Develop and provide training and materials for Academic Advisors and faculty staff with advising responsibilities for continuing students.
  9. Direct students with educational, career, or personal concerns, or skill/learning deficiencies, to other resources and programs on the campus and/or refer them to educational, institutional, and community resources and services.
  10. Promote student retention and persistence; Identify environmental conditions that may positively or negatively influence student academic achievement and propose interventions that may neutralize negative conditions.
  11. Generate reports to track registration and course selection progress throughout the year.
  12. Identify at-risk students in consultation with the Academic Division and the Admission Office and develop and implement a monitoring system along with intrusive intervention plans.
  13. Provide a minimum of two training sessions for Academic Advisors and any employee with advising responsibilities prior to registration.
  14. Assist in planning enrollment and retention events and activities, including New Student Orientation, registration events, open houses, and other events as assigned.
  15. Refer students with mental health issues to counseling (virtual or in person at counseling center); Refer students with learning challenges to appropriate resources on campus.
  16. Promote the submission of early alerts; Lead the Campus Care Team that responds to early alerts, including training team members and ensuring each early alert is assigned to a team member, receives a response, and is properly documented and followed up as needed.
  17. Coordinate Advising Office and employees, including selection, training, supervision, evaluation, and workflow distribution.
