Job Summary

The Utility Worker assists skilled workers in performing assigned duties and may be assigned to specific tasks or transferred as needed during project completion.

This position primarily involves unskilled manual labor and requires the ability to work independentlywhile adhering to safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up barricades and traffic cones; direct traffic as needed.
  • Break ground or pavement using jackhammers or other appropriate methods.
  • Dig trenches using shovels or other tools; tamp and backfill trenches.
  • Assist with the installation of electrical and gas lines using equipment such as backhoes, trenching machines, and air compressors.
  • Operate dump trucks, boring machines, and other heavy machinery for utility projects.
  • Construct duct banks, manholes, and natural gas mains and distribution lines.
  • Assist Journeymen and skilled workers in completing assigned tasks.
  • Report equipment status and observe safety guidelines in all operations.
  • Perform various manual tasks such as loading/unloading materials, cleaning work areas, and transporting tools.
  • Work on-call shifts, including holidays, nights, weekends, and unscheduled overtime when necessary.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and prioritize tasks to meet unit needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to dig, spread, and level dirt, gravel, and sand.
  • Ability to load and unload materials by hand or with equipment (e.g., forklift).
  • Dexterity in performing tasks like dismantling forms, cutting insulation material, and removing concrete.
  • Ability to transport tools, equipment, and materials around work sites.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces such as manholes and vaults.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in utility or construction environments.
  • Knowledge of safe handling and care of tools and materials used in trade.
